The Automotive Technician at Autocare
AASRA was thrilled to be invited to share the stage with Jeff Smit and Brendan Sorensen from TaT who ran an interactive presentation entitled “Utilising OEM data for your independent repair business – the power of AASRA and the Motor Vehicle Information Scheme.”
Sorensen did an excellent job structuring the presentation and steering the discussion to highlight the benefits of accessing genuine OEM repair information, pointing out that correct information is no longer optional. He referred to functions where OEM information is often essential, including understanding fault code logic and test parameters, accessing VIN-specific wiring diagrams and pinouts, locations of components, modules, and grounds, programming and coding modules, and performing security-linked procedures (keys and immobilizer codes). “Workshops using OEM data are moving ahead. Those without it will fall behind,” he said.
AASRA gave a brief review of the evolution of the organisation and it role in the industry, outlining some of the more common friction point in accessing OEM portals and summarising the various ways AASRA facilitates the smooth running of the Scheme. An AASRA membership currently provides access to 34 participating brands, which represents 87 percent of the Australian carpark, although this is expected to grow as new brands enter the market.
In summing up Sorensen said: “The tools are here, and the access is real. Now it’s about confidence, capability and co-operation.”

Autocare 2025 – a convention to remember!
The Australian Automotive Aftermarket Association brought the industry together at the recent Autocare Convention in Brisbane, and AASRA was thrilled to be one of the many exhibitors to be part of this biennial event.
Thousands of technicians and workshop owners attended the world-class technical training and business education, a highly interactive trade show, and extensive opportunities to network and discover new things.
The comprehensive Workshop Management Program, sponsored by Megabus, featured respected industry leaders and successful workshop owners sharing practical, real-world strategies to foster growth and future-proof their businesses. Of particular interest to AASRA was the discussion about the all-makes repair model, and how to leverage Australia’s Motor Vehicle Information Scheme to enhance diagnostic and repair capabilities.
The Technical Training Program, sponsored by Auto-Tech, featured leading U.S. diagnostic trainers and Australia’s best technical trainers, combining to create an unparalleled program for technicians and apprentices. Covering topics such as advanced diagnostics, EV service and repair, ADAS and J2534 programming across major brands, it was designed to ensure today’s technicians are future-ready in an increasingly complex automotive landscape.
Stuart Charity, CEO of the AAAA said: “Autocare 2025 gave our industry a powerful moment to pause and look forward. From world-class technical and business education to an exhibition floor full of innovation, Autocare was a valuable investment for attendees. You simply can’t access this level of training anywhere else in the country.”
Day two of the convention included the launch of a new national ADAS Industry Code of Conduct, a practical, sector-specific guide on how to manage one of the most critical safety issues in modern vehicle repair: calibration of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems. ADAS features such as autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep assist, blind spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control are all becoming standard in new vehicles. These systems are safety-critical technologies that play a pivotal role in reducing road fatalities and serious injuries.
Lesley Yates, Director of Government Relations and Advocacy at the AAAA, said: “The Code is a vital step in ensuring vehicle safety systems continue to function as intended throughout a vehicle’s life. ADAS isn’t just a feature or an optional extra, it’s the foundation of future automotive technology. It’s the beginning of the next technological revolution.”
Autocare 2025 was a resounding success by any measure and AASRA was proud to be involved.

FYI: Automakers that Require EV Certificates for Service Information Access
AASRA is aware of several automakers that require an EV Certificate to access service information. This is a difficult situation from both stakeholder’s point of view. “The Scheme” required automakers to split high voltage information from general repair information where ever practicable. Many automakers have found that to be a very difficult task while still providing useful information.
Repairers have limited options to obtain High Voltage safety training currently. AASRA is working with TAFE’s and automakers to help with that issue. Government and Automakers are working out the details of the scheme. In the meantime please be aware of the lists of both AASRA participating and non-participating brands that require EV certificate. The non-participating brands are not using AASRA to validate credentials or certification and are undertaking their own Fit and Proper Person validation. Repairers should be prepared that this will likely mean applying with each non-participating brand in a way similar to the AASRA process.
